Following on from our last alternative cures health related post Health: Stressed About Stress?, now might be a good time to carry that forward to the whole idea on what the results can be when we focus on health.

As most advocates of alternative cures will agree on, our biggest asset when it comes to curing illness is our own mind, or belief system. Its back to the placebo effect in that when the mind believes wholeheartedly that the body is healing from whatever illness it has suffered, then the body will indeed heal.

So from an alternative cures standpoint, what do you suppose happens when we are constantly bombarded by the media every day about how overweight and obese we are becoming as a race?

Well it doesn’t take too much working out that the more you are made to believe something is true, the more true it becomes. Same with people worry and fret that they are not at their “correct weight”. The more you worry about something, the more it is going to come around and give you more of what you worry about!

Better to focus your thoughts on being healthy, strong and at your ideal weight.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand how that works, it doesn’t mean you should reject it out of hand. You don’t know how electricity works, but you know it’s there and what it does. Just because you can’t see, hear or touch electricity, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist - if you’ve ever had a jolt of 240 volts shoot up your arm from a bare wire, you’ll know what I’m talking about!

And it’s no longer the realm of alternative cures mumbo jumbo either. Eminent doctors and psychologists are coming out of the woodwork to lend their voice to this trend.

Dr Terry Dovey, a psychologist specialising in stress eating at the University of Staffordshire, UK believes that the constant avalanche of scare mongering about obesity is making things much worse. “Since the ’70s there have been hundreds of reports warning how big we’re becoming and a fat lot of good they’ve done,” he says.

“Obesity rates have risen by almost 400% in the past 25 years and the government’s most recent research warns being obese is actually more dangerous than smoking - it cuts our life expectancy by as much as 13 years. The trouble is, all these stories make us more stressed about our weight, which is one of the key triggers for comfort eating! Telling someone they’re fat without providing real, long-term solutions only adds to the problem.”

The message then is pretty clear that if you want to lose weight, you have to stop worrying about being overweight, put it into perspective and simply eat healthily and take regular exercise. That’s not one of those alternative cures, its simple common sense.

Sometimes, if we only used our common sense more than listening to all the media hyped up scare stories about this or that health issue, we might just stay a lot more healthy in the long run. Of course one alternative cures style long term benefit we can rely on to be 100% effective is to throw the TV out. That way you kill two birds with one stone - remove the biggest source of the media hype and give yourself an excuse to get up off your lazy behind and do some exercise!
